"Do I need a CDL for this truck?" is one of the most common questions at Victory Auto Commercial. The answer matters because it affects which vehicles you can legally drive, whether your employees can drive them, and what licensing costs you need to budget. The good news: most used commercial vehicles sold for local Memphis business use do not require a CDL.
The Three Triggers for a CDL in Tennessee
Tennessee follows federal CDL rules. A Commercial Driver's License is required when ANY ONE of these conditions is met:
- 1.GVWR over 26,001 lbs: the vehicle itself (including maximum load) is rated at more than 26,001 pounds gross vehicle weight
- 2.Combination vehicle: the vehicle tows a trailer, and the combination has a GCWR (gross combined weight rating) over 26,001 lbs with the trailer GVWR exceeding 10,001 lbs
- 3.Special vehicle types: passenger vehicles carrying 16+ passengers (including driver), or any vehicle transporting hazardous materials requiring placards
For most Memphis business owners buying a single box truck, cargo van, flatbed, or pickup for commercial work — none of these conditions apply. A standard 22 ft box truck on an Isuzu NPR-HD chassis has a GVWR of 19,500 lbs. A Ford Transit cargo van maxes out around 10,360 lbs GVWR. These do not require a CDL.
CDL Classes: A, B, and C Explained
- →Class A CDL: combination vehicles over 26,001 lbs GCWR where the trailer exceeds 10,001 lbs GVWR. Covers tractor-trailers, livestock haulers, flatbeds with heavy trailers.
- →Class B CDL: single vehicles over 26,001 lbs GVWR, or towing a trailer under 10,001 lbs GVWR. Covers large box trucks (26+ ft on heavy chassis), dump trucks, large flatbeds.
- →Class C CDL: vehicles that don't fall into A or B but carry 16+ passengers or hazardous materials. Covers some passenger vans and hazmat vehicles.
For most commercial vehicle buyers in Memphis, Class B is the relevant question. If your truck is over 26,001 lbs GVWR, you need a Class B CDL in Tennessee.
Common Vehicles and Whether They Require a CDL
- →Ford Transit cargo van (all configurations): GVWR 8,600–10,360 lbs. No CDL required.
- →Chevy/GMC Express cargo van: GVWR 8,600–10,000 lbs. No CDL required.
- →Ford F-250/F-350 pickup: GVWR 8,800–14,000 lbs. No CDL required.
- →Isuzu NPR/NQR box truck (16–22 ft): GVWR 14,500–19,500 lbs. No CDL required.
- →Isuzu NRR/FTR medium-duty box truck: GVWR 19,500–26,000 lbs. No CDL in most configurations — verify the sticker.
- →Isuzu FTR/FVR heavy-duty box truck (26+ ft): GVWR 26,001–33,000 lbs. Class B CDL required.
- →Single-axle flatbed on F-550/Ram 5500: GVWR ~19,500 lbs. No CDL required.
- →Tandem-axle dump truck: GVWR 33,000+ lbs. Class B CDL required.
The GVWR Sticker: Where to Find It
GVWR is stamped on the door jamb sticker — the white or silver label on the driver's door or doorframe. It shows the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, which is the maximum the vehicle is designed to carry including its own weight. This number, not the vehicle's actual weight, determines CDL requirements. A truck with a 25,999 lb GVWR driven with only 10,000 lbs of load still does not require a CDL.
CDL Endorsements You May Need
If your vehicle does require a CDL, certain cargo types require additional endorsements on your Class B or Class A license:
- →H endorsement: hazardous materials (fuel trucks, chemical transport)
- →N endorsement: tank vehicles carrying liquid or gas in bulk
- →T endorsement: double/triple trailers
- →P endorsement: passenger vehicles (buses, shuttles)
- →X endorsement: combination of hazmat + tank
For most Memphis commercial operations — delivery, contracting, moving, landscaping — no endorsements are needed beyond the base CDL class.
How to Get a CDL in Tennessee
If you do need a CDL (or want to hire drivers who have one), here's the process in Tennessee:
- 1.Pass the CDL knowledge test at a Tennessee Driver Services center
- 2.Obtain a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) — you must hold it for at least 14 days before taking the skills test
- 3.Pass the CDL skills test: pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control, and road test
- 4.Pay the applicable fees and receive your CDL
- 5.Cost is typically $75–$115 in state fees. Private CDL training schools run $3,000–$8,000 if you need training.
