For many Memphis business owners, buying a commercial truck isn't just an operational decision — it's a tax strategy. Section 179 of the IRS tax code allows businesses to deduct the full cost of qualifying equipment, including commercial vehicles, in the year of purchase instead of depreciating it over several years. In 2026, the deduction limit is $1,220,000. Most commercial trucks qualify. Here's how to use it.
What Is Section 179?
Normally, when a business buys a vehicle or piece of equipment, the IRS requires the cost to be "depreciated" — spread out over 5 to 7 years. Section 179 is an election that lets you instead deduct the entire purchase price in year one, as long as the vehicle is placed in service during that tax year and used more than 50% for business.
For a business owner in the 24% federal tax bracket buying a $45,000 cargo van, Section 179 means a $10,800 federal tax reduction in year one — versus getting that same deduction spread over 5+ years under standard depreciation.
Which Commercial Vehicles Qualify?
Most commercial trucks and vans qualify for full Section 179 expensing because they exceed 6,000 lbs GVWR, which removes them from the "luxury auto" limits that apply to passenger vehicles.
- →Box trucks (all sizes) — qualify, typically full deduction
- →Cargo vans (Ford Transit, Chevy Express, Ram ProMaster, Mercedes Sprinter) — qualify if GVWR over 6,000 lbs; most full-size cargo vans exceed this
- →Pickup trucks with GVWR over 6,000 lbs — qualify; most 3/4-ton and 1-ton pickups do
- →Half-ton pickups (F-150, Silverado 1500, Ram 1500) — subject to a $28,900 Section 179 cap per vehicle in 2026 if GVWR under 6,000 lbs; many half-tons do exceed 6,000 lbs GVWR, especially 4WD models
- →Flatbed trucks — qualify
- →Dump trucks — qualify
Bonus Depreciation
In addition to Section 179, bonus depreciation is available for new and used commercial vehicles. Bonus depreciation has been phasing down: 60% in 2024, 40% in 2025, 20% in 2026. Section 179 is generally more advantageous when available, but bonus depreciation can supplement it or apply when your Section 179 deduction exceeds your business income for the year.
Requirements to Qualify
- →The vehicle must be purchased (not leased) and placed in service during the tax year
- →Business use must exceed 50% — keep mileage logs
- →Applies to new and used vehicles equally
- →You must have taxable business income equal to or greater than the deduction amount (Section 179 cannot create a net operating loss, though unused amounts carry forward)
- →The vehicle must be used in a trade or business — not personal use
Tennessee State Tax Treatment
Tennessee does not have a state income tax on wages, but businesses operating as pass-through entities (LLCs, S-corps, partnerships) or C-corporations may have Tennessee Franchise and Excise tax obligations. Tennessee conforms to federal Section 179 for purposes of the Excise Tax (income-based). Always verify current state conformity with a Tennessee CPA.
A Practical Example
A Memphis HVAC contractor buys a $52,000 used box truck in October 2026. The truck is placed in service immediately. Under Section 179, the contractor elects to deduct the full $52,000 in 2026. At a combined federal/state effective tax rate of 28%, the deduction saves approximately $14,560 in taxes — effectively reducing the real cost of the truck to $37,440. The financing payment doesn't change, but the after-tax cost does.
How to Claim It
File IRS Form 4562 (Depreciation and Amortization) with your business tax return. Your tax preparer or CPA will handle this. To qualify, the vehicle must be purchased and in service before December 31 of the tax year. Don't wait until late December — give yourself time to complete the purchase and take delivery.
