Memphis isn't just a great city to run a delivery business — it may be the best city in the country for it. Home to the FedEx global hub, one of the busiest inland ports, and a massive distribution infrastructure built around the I-40/I-55/I-240 interchange, Memphis has more commercial freight per capita than nearly any other mid-size city in the US. If you're starting a delivery, courier, or last-mile service here, you're in the right place. This guide covers which vehicle you need, what it costs, and how to get started.
Step 1: Define Your Business Model First
Before you buy a vehicle, define your delivery model. The right truck for a furniture delivery business is very different from the right van for a flower courier. Ask yourself:
- →What are you delivering? (packages, food, furniture, freight, medical supplies?)
- →What's the typical size and weight of a single load?
- →How many stops per day? (high-stop routes favor smaller, maneuverable vans)
- →Do you need refrigeration, lift gates, or shelving?
- →Are you working for a DSP (Amazon, FedEx), for yourself, or for local businesses?
- →City routes only, or highway and regional?
The Four Main Vehicle Types for Delivery Businesses
Cargo Vans — Best for High-Stop Courier and Last-Mile
Full-size cargo vans (Ford Transit, Chevy Express, Ram ProMaster) are the workhorse of last-mile delivery. Easy to park, easy to load from the rear, low step-in height. Transit and ProMaster have walk-through cab-to-cargo access. Capacity is typically 250–350 cubic feet with 2,000–3,500 lbs payload. If you're running 80+ stops a day with smaller packages, this is your vehicle.
Box Trucks — Best for Furniture, Appliances, and Volume Freight
A 16–22 ft box truck gives you 800–1,400+ cubic feet of dry cargo space with a weatherproof aluminum box. Liftgate models eliminate the need to hand-bomb heavy items. If your average delivery weighs 100–500 lbs and you're doing 10–30 stops per day, a box truck will outperform a cargo van significantly. No CDL required for trucks under 26,001 lbs GVWR.
Pickup Trucks — Best for Construction, Landscaping, and Contractor Supply
A 3/4-ton or 1-ton pickup with a service body or flatbed is ideal for contractors delivering materials, tools, or equipment. Pickups are easy to drive, easy to maintain, and can double as personal vehicles. If you're doing residential HVAC, plumbing, or construction work as your delivery model, a pickup with a service body may be the right call.
Flatbed or Dump Trucks — Best for Bulk Materials and Equipment
Mulch, gravel, lumber, pallets, equipment — if you're moving bulk materials or loading with a forklift, a flatbed or dump is your tool. These are more specialized and require a bit more driving skill for larger configurations, but the earning potential on per-load freight is high.

Licensing and Registration in Tennessee
For vehicles under 10,001 lbs GVWR in intrastate commerce (staying within Tennessee), a standard driver's license is sufficient and no DOT number is required. For interstate commerce, or vehicles over 10,001 lbs, a USDOT number from FMCSA is required. Register at fmcsa.dot.gov. No CDL is required for vehicles under 26,001 lbs GVWR.
If you're doing for-hire freight transport across state lines, you may also need operating authority (MC number) from FMCSA. FedEx DSP drivers using FedEx-provided vehicles are exempt from this — the operating authority belongs to FedEx.
Insurance
Commercial auto insurance for a single van or light truck in Memphis typically runs $1,200–$2,500/year depending on use type, coverage level, and driving record. For-hire cargo carriers need commercial auto plus cargo liability. Talk to an independent commercial insurance broker — not a personal auto agent — for accurate quotes.
